The Sydney Rays have taken out the inaugural Chikarovski Cup after defeating the NSW Country Eagles in the final round of competition.
After defeating the Rams back in round two in a convincing display of running rugby at Rat Park, the Rays women took out the silverware by making a back to back performance over their country counterparts.
Rays skipper and last weekend's goal kicker Emily Robinson says that the win on Monday afternoon was just the icing on the cake for what has been a great maiden season with the Rays.
“It has been an awesome six weeks with the girls and coaches, we have come from five different clubs and really connected well,” she said.
After winning the Jack Scott Cup with the Warringah Ratettes and touring with the Wallaroos to Ireland for the Rugby World Cup among other on-field successes, Robinson now looks forward to some well-earned down time.
“I think my body will be grateful for a bit of a rest from what has probably been my biggest year in rugby,” Robinson admits. “But there is no time like the present so you will see me in the gym first thing tomorrow morning!”
The Chikarovski Cup competition has been a platform for the women of NSW to hone their skills, with Wallaroos such as Robinson mixing it up with up-and-comers from the club competition, Jack Scott Cup.
“The girls really showed an amazing team effort but there’s also some individuals who have really stepped up and have definitely put their names on the map,” said Robinson.
“This is a massive stepping stone for women’s rugby and I really hope we can see this competition expand in 2018 so that Australian women can maintain playing a high level of rugby, consistently.”
