The Sydney Rays have won their first match of the inaugural Chikarovski Cup against the side from Greater Sydney at Pittwater Rugby Park over the weekend.

The Rays, captained by Emily Robinson, claimed themselves five competition points after defeating round one victors the Rams, 22-10 during the curtain raiser to the NRC men’s fixture between the Rays and the Melbourne Rising.

Rays head coach Luke Thiessen said that his team’s ability to unite in such a short amount of time was a major contributor to their round two victory.

“The girls had plenty of belief in themselves,” said Thiessen. “They came together in a short period of time, especially coming together from four different clubs around Sydney including Waverley, Blacktown, Warringah and Sydney U17s.”

Whilst the Rams boasted a big, physical forward pack, ultimately it was the Rays’ ability to turn it over and convert those opportunities into points said Thiessen.

“Our ability to maintain ball control was crucial to our cause given most of our points came from counter attacking opportunities,” he said.

Looking ahead to their final round clash against the NSW Country Eagles, Thiessen said his side know what they need to do to take out the Chikarovski Cup.

“We left three or four tries out there and we are looking to rectify that against the Eagles,” he said.

The Rays will take on the NSW Country Eagles in the final round of the inaugural Chikarovski Cup on Monday, October 2nd as the curtain raiser for the NRC local derby between the Eagles and the Rays down at Simon Poidevin Oval, Goulburn.
