NSW Waratahs Lock Ned Hanigan has been named as a finalist for the Rugby Union Players Association (RUPA) 2019 Community Service Award.

Hanigan’s nomination comes off the back of his ongoing commitment to community and charity engagement.

Hanigan grew up in Coonamble, in central-west New South Wales and the drought is something that hits incredibly close to home.

Through the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation partnership with batyr, Ned has been able to give back to his community and spread the word on mental health.

Greg Mumm, Head of the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation, said the passion Hanigan showed at the launch of the Get Talkin’ Tour and recent Dance for Drought was contagious.

“Having someone like Ned present at these events is great, because he’s so passionate about the cause,” Mumm said.

“He’ll always put his hand up to help out, and I think that’s a great display of his character,” he said.

The Community Service Award is presented annually to the player who has made extraordinary service to the community through charity events, appearances and promotion of a community or not-for-profit cause.

Hanigan will join his fellow nominees at the Rugby Players Lunch next Wednesday 11 December where the winner will be announced.
