It might not have been the season they’d planned for, but it could turn into the season to remember when Kentwell Cup sides Drummoyne and Waverley meet in this weekend’s grand final.

The 2020 Kentwell Cup will be decided on Saturday 26 September, with an undefeated Drummoyne set to face a strong Waverley outfit.

Despite defeating Waverley in the round games, Drummoyne captain Shaun Dixon said it will all come down to Saturday’s game.

“The boys are feeling good, but we’re trying not to get ahead of ourselves because it’s finals rugby and we know whoever turns up on the day will take the cake,” Dixon said.

“That win (round 7) doesn’t mean a thing to us now, it’s do or die,” he said.

The ‘Dirty Reds’ have delivered week in, week out in season 2020, and Dixon said it will be business as usual again this weekend.

“You can’t go in too confident, you’ve just got to be as prepared as possible,” Dixon said.

“Training has been going well and all the boys have been feeling pretty relaxed - by this time of year we should know what we’re doing.

“We know they’ve got a big forward pack, so we’ll try and shut them down. But other than that we’ve just been focusing on ourselves, and our game.

“We’ve got a good plan but it will come down to who turns up on the day,” he said.

For Waverley, there is an extra drive to perform on the weekend, as the club hasn’t won the Kentwell Cup since 1991, the same year that captain Callum McKenzie was born.

“Just talking to some of the old boys around the club, you can see how much it would mean to them and that gives us that bit of added motivation,” McKenzie said.

“I mean I was born in 1991 and I’m one of the older boys in the team, so to get the win this weekend would be really special,” he said.

McKenzie said it’s the work that the team have put in all season that has got them into the grand final, and that hard work will continue come Saturday.

“I think everyone’s got that healthy mix of nerves and confidence which is always good,” McKenzie said.

“We’ve studied Drummoyne and have some good ideas that we can pull out of the bag on Saturday and hopefully get one up on them.

“But at the end of the day, we’ve just got to play how we have all season, because that’s how we’ve ended up here,” he said.

Drummoyne v Waverley will kick off at 3pm on Saturday 26 September. Due to restricted spectator numbers, access will only be provided to those with tickets issued by their club. The game will be streamed live on Cluch TV from 3pm.
