NSW Rugby would like to congratulate Northern Barbarians Junior Rugby Club on their nomination for Community Club of the Year in the Sport NSW Awards.

The Northern Barbarians (formerly known as Beecroft Cherrybrook) has a proud history, and is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the club this year.

The Club currently has more than 180 registered players ranging from Under 6s to Under 17s.

With the new committee elected three years ago, Club President Adam Muir said to say the club is chuffed with the nomination would be an understatement.

“It’s a huge honour, and it’s an acknowledgement not only of the committee but all our members,’ Muir said.

“As well as all the hard work we’ve done over the last three years to get to where we’re at.

“It’s been driven a lot by the community – we’ve got a very passionate community at the Northern Barbarians,” he said.

Muir added that the nomination is a testament to the tireless work and efforts of the many volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep the club ticking.

“If you’re not on the committee of a sporting club, it’s hard to understand the hours that are spent to get clubs up and running,” Muir said.

“The time coaches and managers spend preparing for training and games, getting the fields ready and preparing everything for our canteen.

“For us, the highlight of this nomination is the recognition of all those people behind the scenes who give up their time to help,” he said.

Muir couldn’t find the words to describe what it would mean to take out the prestigious award.

“It would be something that, I don’t think when the new committee formed three years ago, we would achieve so quickly,” Muir said.

“It would mean the world to us - our members pour so much time and effort into the club and it would mean so much to each and every one of us.

“We’ve been getting so many emails and messages of congratulations and everyone is so proud to be a part of Northern Barbarians at the moment,” he said.

NSW Rugby Coach Education and Development Manager Owain Roberts offered his congratulations on behalf of NSW Rugby to the club.

“The Northern Barbarians are very deserving of this nomination, and are a club that has worked relentlessly to support and encourage juniors to play rugby union,’ Roberts said.

“Over the last three years they’ve been able to keep increasing their participant numbers, develop all their coaches and most importantly; engage with the local community. It’s a huge testament to Adam and his team for their hard work,” he said.

The Sport NSW Awards will be celebrated at a special ceremony on Thursday 17 June at Bankwest Stadium.
