Farrar Memorial Agricultural High School takes out the 2024 Waratahs Shield in a gripping final against Central Coast Grammar.
The 2024 Finals for the Waratah Shield (WS) were held at Woollahra Oval between 4 schools on a blistering Friday afternoon.
Farrar Memorial Agricultural High School, Central Coast Grammar (CCG), Hunter Valley Grammar (HVG) and Redfield College all successfully won their zone competitions and were now prepared to fight it out for the WS.
Farrar and Redfield were the first to kick-off the finals and it was a dominant performance from the Central North side. Farrar ran four tries in the 40-minute game time to Redfield's zero and progressed through to the final later that afternoon.
CCG and HVG were next up and this game proved to be more of an arm wrestle.
CCG opened the game with two quick tries and it seemed to replicate game 1, however, HVG fought back to bring the score 10-5 at the half.
CCG was first to strike and took a 10-point lead, HVG scored a late consolation try to bring the final score to 15-10
The 3rd & 4th playoff was between Redfield and HVG and after a tight battle Redfield were able to come out on top with a 14-10 victory over a valiant HVG side.
It was now time for the big dance between Farrer from Tamworth and CCG from the Central Coast.
It was a grueling game with both teams displaying impressive defensive skills, however Farrer found another level and were able to score the only points of the game. Winning a thrilling Grand Final 7-0.
Andrew Hill Head of Strategy and Foundation Programs for impressed with the skills on display and the growth of the competition in recent years
"Since the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation restarted the Waratah Shield we’ve seen the competition grow and for the 3rd year in a row, we’ve had a Grand Final of a high standard that was won by a try or less.
With the Waratah W shield starting up in term 4 for girls, we are starting to see some real opportunities for schools from the bush to the beach to have their chance to play in a great competition and we’re grateful for the support from The Rugby Club Foundation” Andrew Hill
“The Rugby Club Foundation is delighted to support the re-invigoration of the Waratah Shield. The Rugby on display during this year’s finals was a reminder of the quality of the experiences on and off the field this tournament provides.” Angus Bruxner
