After a promising Wallabies season in 2024, tight-head prop Taniela Tupou joins the NSW Waratahs from the disbanded Melbourne Rebels. His physicality and ball play are trademark. His performances for the Reds during Super Rugby AU in 2020 and 2021 saw him win the Pilecki Medal as Queensland’s ‘Players’ Player. Tupou has overcome several significant injury setbacks during his time in national colours but for season 2025 he is fit and in great form. Born in Tofoa, Tonga, he first came to prominence in the Tongan Under 15s tour to New Zealand, after which he received a scholarship to Auckland’s Sacred Heart College. In 2014 at age 18, his three tries against Kelston Boys High School saw him become an overnight sensation. The battle to secure him was won by Australia . An eligibility clause prohibited him from playing for New Zealand Schools. His brother Criff lived in Brisbane and idol Quade Cooper played for Queensland, so he signed with the Reds for 2015. In 2017, Tupou made his Test debut against Scotland at Murrayfield and has competed in two Rugby World Cups - in 2019 and 2023.
