Angus will support the partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award - Australia, championed by the Positive Rugby Foundation, which is designed to provide young people in rugby the opportunity to take part in the world’s leading youth development program.
Recently named as World Rugby’s Referee of the Year, Angus over the coming weeks will be one of the referees for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Gardner said it was a back injury that inspired the decision to take up refereeing at 15 years old, around the same time he was completing his Duke of Edinburgh Award.
"The skills that I would take from the Duke of Edinburgh that are transferrable to refereeing would be definitely that organisational piece and the preparation piece.
"It's a fantastic program, it's great for young people - it helps them express their initiative around service to the community," he said
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is up and running across New South Wales rugby clubs as well as through schools.
