Gibson took over the Head Coach role in 2016, following a three-year stint as an Assistant to Michael Cheika, with the former All Black at helm of the NSW Waratahs for more than 60 Super Rugby fixtures.

Gibson was an integral part of the NSW Waratahs 2014 Super Rugby Championship as an Assistant Coach, and then led the side to a semi-final appearance after topping the Australian Conference in 2018.

Gibson said that the decision to leave was made after careful consideration and in the best interest of the team moving forward.

“I’ve been incredibly invested in this team and NSW Rugby for the past seven years,” Gibson said.

“It wasn’t an easy decision [to leave] but one that I think is in the best interest of the team, myself and my family.

“I’m proud to have served as Head Coach for that period, this is now a wonderful opportunity for someone to bring the next generation of young players through and really own that process for the next 3-4 years.

“I will take away some fantastic shared memories, new friends and a feeling I have contributed to the wider development of rugby in New South Wales.

“I’ve received tremendous support from our Chairman, CEO, Captain and senior players during my time here. It’s been a steep learning curve and I take away some valuable lessons that will serve me well into the future.”

Gibson acknowledged the work of Andrew Hore and the NSW Rugby Board for their support of player development and pathways.

“The bringing together of NSW Rugby and the Waratahs is something I’m proud to have been a part of, along with the systems and processes we’ve developed since that time,” Gibson added.

“That pathway we’ve built has been a major contributor to the footballers and young men we’ve been able to produce, a collection of players that I’m immensely proud of – absolute gentlemen.”

NSW Rugby CEO, Andrew Hore congratulated Gibson on his tenure as Head Coach.

“It’s hard to sum up the contribution Daryl has made not only to the NSW Waratahs, but to NSW Rugby in just a few short words,” Hore said.

“Daryl has been integral to the development of our player pathways, with his passion and drive helping us build a nursery for rugby talent in New South Wales.

“NSW Rugby and the Waratahs are now equipped with pathways and coaching positions that will service our Super Rugby efforts for many years to come – thanks to an untold contribution from Daryl.

“His leadership of our Super Rugby playing group through some difficult periods has been exceptional, whilst on the field Daryl has overseen and supported the careers of many fantastic players – fostering their growth both on and off the field.

“Daryl always understood the bigger picture and NSW Rugby will be forever indebted for the work he’s done to grow the game both now and into the future.

“I’d like to thank Daryl for everything he has contributed and wish both him and his family all the very best.”
