On Monday night, Dukes Rugby Ambassador and referee Angus Gardner was named Sport NSW Official of the Year.
Angus’ award adds to his many accolades over the last 12 months, where he was awarded 2018 World Rugby Referee of the Year and appointed as a referee for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Angus is widely admired within refereeing circles for being generous with his time, in giving back to the sport, as well as being a great role model for aspirational referees.
Angus has had more than 20 years’ experience as a referee at all levels of the game and said he is grateful for the experiences he’s had so far.
“I was 15 when I started my refereeing career, it kind of fell into my lap as a result of a back injury,” Angus said.
“The great thing about refereeing is obviously the people that you meet along that rugby journey and also the camaraderie amongst other referees,” he said.
