NSW Rugby Union (NSWRU) is proud to announce the release of its 2025–2027 Strategic Plan. A bold and focused roadmap designed to strengthen the sport’s foundations, engage new and existing audiences, and build a sustainable future for rugby in New South Wales.

The overall goal for NSWRU is to achieve 25% growth in the number of Rugby participants in NSW by 2027. All initiatives across the game for these three years will assist with that target.

Three key pillars anchor the plan:

Great Competition Experiences

NSWRU is committed to delivering consistent, high-quality competition experiences at all levels. The plan outlines a renewed focus on improving match operations, player and coach development pathways, referee support, and competition structures that foster inclusivity, fairness, and high performance across the state.

Growth & Engagement

Developing the NSWRU workforce to boost the capabilities of existing staff whilst increasing the headcount across community rugby will allow for targeted growth strategies to focus on priority areas, including schools, clubs, women's rugby and regions such as Western Sydney.

Specific recruitment and retention strategies will be in place to ensure NSWRU not only grows participation but also enhances the overall rugby experience for communities across the state.

Sustainable Future

A core focus of the plan is building a financially sustainable future for rugby in NSW. This means aligning with corporate companies that elevate the Rugby brand across NSW, working with the Government to maximise the funding opportunities available to Rugby and ensuring that the promotion of the game is cohesive across all mediums.

NSWRU Chairman Tony Crawford said, "This strategic plan represents our renewed commitment to every level of the game.

It's about future-proofing rugby in NSW and ensuring that every player, coach, volunteer and supporter has a place in the sport's long-term success. We're proud of the direction this plan sets, and we're excited to bring it to life with our rugby community."

This plan sets measurable objectives and initiatives under each pillar, providing clear targets and actionable steps to track progress and ensure accountability across the organisation.

Each strategic pillar includes specific KPIs, timelines, and key actions designed to drive outcomes, foster alignment among stakeholders, and deliver tangible benefits to the rugby community at all levels.

NSWRU CEO Peter Murphy added, “The 2025–2027 Strategic Plan is a bold step forward for rugby in New South Wales.

By focusing on key growth areas and aligning with national objectives, we are setting the stage for a thriving rugby community that will inspire future generations. Thank you for your continued dedication and for being part of this exciting journey. Together, we’re building the future."
