The 50 players have been selected in the wake of the U16’s invitational tournament held last weekend, which saw NSW Schools I & II, NSW Country Juniors and Sydney Junior Rugby Union battle it out at Narrabeen.
In the lead up, the two squads will be put through their paces at two weekend-long camps in the weeks prior to the September competition.
NSW Rugby Coach Education and Pathways Manager Matt Evrard says the intensive camps are the platform to educate the staff and players in the ‘Waratah Way’ which encompasses all aspects from values to the style of play.
“The idea behind the program is that all players will leave the program with an understanding of how to prepare, train, act and play like a NSW Waratah,” said Evrard. “The coaching staff will get a professional understanding of how to coach, manage and condition athletes in a professional environment in a short space of time.
“The coaching staff selected for these teams was an extensive process and we at NSW Rugby see this as their first step in the coaching pathway for NSW Rugby Union.”
NSW Gen Blue U20 Head Coach Pat McCutcheon says that this year’s selection trials was conducted differently to years prior.
“The U16’s selection process this year has been more inclusive which gives us (NSW Rugby) a larger talent pool to call upon to represent NSW,” said McCutcheon. “Players will be earmarked at this level to continue their growth and progression up the Gen Blue pathway through continual hard work and persistence.”
