NSW Rugby has welcomed a significant boost for grassroots Rugby Union, with the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program delivering $329,000 in funding across 42 community rugby projects across the state.

The latest round of funding represents a 54% increase in total funding for rugby union projects compared to the same program the previous year, highlighting growing government support for Rugby Union at a critical time for the sport in New South Wales.

The funding will directly benefit clubs and communities by supporting facility upgrades, equipment purchases, and participation initiatives, ensuring rugby remains accessible, safe, and inclusive for players of all ages and backgrounds.

NSW Rugby CEO Peter Murphy said the investment will have a lasting impact on the grassroots game.

“This funding is a major win for community rugby across New South Wales. Our clubs and volunteers are the backbone of the game, and this investment allows them to continue creating positive, inclusive environments for players and families.”

“With 42 projects receiving support, we’re seeing real momentum at the community level. It’s especially encouraging to see such an increase in funding for rugby union projects, which reflects the growing recognition of rugby’s role in bringing people together and building strong local communities.”

The announcement comes at an exciting time for Rugby Union in NSW, with the state preparing to host the 2027 (men) and 2029 (women) Rugby World Cups, further elevating the sport’s profile and participation opportunities.

“As we look ahead to hosting major global events, investments like this ensure our grassroots clubs are strong. Community rugby is where it all begins, and this support helps set the foundation for future growth and success.”

NSW Rugby extended its thanks to the NSW Government for its continued commitment to community sport and encouraged clubs to take advantage of future funding opportunities.
