One of the largest rugby sevens competitions will be staged in NSW this weekend when Forster hosts the 2019 Youth State Sevens Championships.
More than 1200 young men and women representing 96 teams will take part in the three day event which is being held at the Forster Tuncurry Dolphins Rugby Union Club.
2019 will be the second year the event is held in Forster and Dolphins president Damian Daczko said it was a great showcase of junior rugby.
“There’s nothing better than seeing 96 teams running around enjoying their rugby, it’s a great promotion of our great game,” Daczko said.
Tournament Director Michael Doyle attributed the popularity of the event to the fun and friendly competition.
“Sevens is a game that’s exciting and fast, you can score lots of tries, and it’s going to be a really good, fun weekend up in Forster,” Doyle said.
“It’s a growing sport, and it's going to be great to see both males and females playing at the same venue,” he said.
Not only is the Championship a celebration of rugby sevens, but four state teams will be selected from the under-17s age group.
“We will select two boys and two girls state teams that will train for, and compete at a national competition,” Doyle said.
The Youth State Sevens Championships will kick off on Friday 11 October with the opening ceremony to be held at 1pm.
Mr Stephen Bromhead, MP for Myall Lakes/Chair of NSW Parliamentary Friends of Rugby Union, will be in attendance for the formalities where a hardworking local volunteer and the president of the Forster Tuncurry Dolphins, Mr Damian Daczko, will be presented with a signed NSW Waratahs jersey.
