NSWRU supports COVIDSafe App

Rugby Australia and NSW Rugby (NSWRU) have pledged their support for the Australian Government’s COVIDSafe App – a major initiative being deployed to help protect the health of the community by quickly alerting people who may be at risk of having contact with Coronavirus.

Consistent with its ongoing commitment to support the health and welfare of the rugby community, Rugby Australia and NSWRU have called on players, volunteers, officials and fans across the country to download the app to play an important role in curbing the spread of the virus.

The contact app launched by the government on Sunday night, alerts health officials if a person has come into close contact with someone who is diagnosed with the virus, enabling them to then notify people who have been in close contact with someone infected with the virus so they can self-quarantine and be tested.

Rugby Australia Executive Chairman, Paul McLean encouraged the rugby community to play their part by being involved in this new initiative.

“Not only is the app going to be an important tool in combating the spread of the virus, it will provide the best opportunity for us, as a community, to move more quickly to reduce restrictions than would otherwise be possible and allow our Rugby clubs to get back to training and playing, and our competitions to resume.

“From our point of view it is a very simple, entirely safe way for our rugby community to play a key role to protect public health and slow the virus even more effectively than what we have seen since the restrictions have been in place.

“We will be working with our State and Territory Member Unions, all rugby communities, and the professional players to encourage the take-up of this smart and sensible public health initiative by the Government.”
