NSW Rugby Union proudly celebrates the induction of Matt Burke, current President of NSW Rugby Union and Wallabies great, into the prestigious World Rugby Hall of Fame.
A Homegrown Rugby Legend - born in Sydney and raised in Carlingford, Burke's rugby journey began in the heart of New South Wales. Rising through the junior ranks, he starred for NSW Schools, Randwick, and the NSW Waratahs, before debuting for the Wallabies in 1993. Over a storied international career, Burke earned 81 Test caps, scored 878 points, and became one of the game’s most dependable fullbacks and goalkickers.
His induction into the World Rugby Hall of Fame further cements his legacy as one of the all-time greats of the game. From his clutch performances in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, where he scored 25 points in the final, to being instrumental in Australia’s only series win over the British & Irish Lions in 2001, Burke consistently delivered on the sport’s biggest stages.
In addition to his on-field legacy, Matt Burke continues to shape the future of the game as President of NSW Rugby Union. His leadership has been pivotal in recognising and honouring excellence within the rugby community - most notably through the establishment of the NSW Rugby Union Hall of Fame in 2024, a project he helped lead and champion.
“Matt exemplifies everything NSW Rugby stands for - skill, humility, and leadership on and off the field,” said Peter Murphy, NSW Rugby CEO. “As President, his passion and dedication continue to uplift our community, and his Hall of Fame induction is a tribute not just to his playing days, but to his lifelong contribution to our game.”
Burke played over 100 games for NSW, amassing more than 1,170 points and becoming the first Waratah to pass the 1,000-point milestone. The Matt Burke Cup, awarded to the NSW Waratahs Player of the Year, is a testament to his enduring influence on the professional game.
NSW Rugby Union proudly honours its President, Matt Burke, and congratulates him on joining the ranks of rugby’s global legends.
