NSW Rugby Union (NSWRU) proudly announces the launch of its new Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), reaffirming its commitment to fostering meaningful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
This initiative is further bolstered by an enhanced partnership with the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team (LMRDT), aiming to create more opportunities for Indigenous participation and leadership within rugby across New South Wales.
The RAP is structured around the core pillars of relationships, respect, and opportunities, providing a strategic framework for NSWRU to advance reconciliation efforts.
By collaborating closely with the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team (LMRDT), NSW Rugby Union (NSWRU) seeks to formalise the partnership and establish a clear framework to guide future programs.
This collaboration will strengthen efforts to connect with communities across the state, supporting Indigenous athletes, coaches, and administrators, and contributing to a more inclusive and diverse rugby community
The ’Lloydies’ have a longstanding history of mentoring and developing Indigenous athletes through its programs. The organisation has a proven track record of providing participants with access to skills development, scholarships, mentoring, and off-field support.
Formalising the relationship with NSWRU offers a valuable opportunity for both organisations to clearly articulate how they will work together to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to connect with Rugby Union.
Tom Evans, President of the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team, said:
“This move by NSWRU to adopt a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) creates a formal process for partnership and the opportunity to develop together. It represents a significant step by NSWRU in outlining how our two organisations will work together.
The formalisation of this partnership through the RAP will lead to better outcomes for the communities NSWRU serves. By working alongside NSWRU, we can open more doors for young Indigenous players to thrive both on and off the field. Both organisations are committed to developing strong role models and future leaders for generations to come.”
NSWRU's CEO Peter Murphy stated, "Our partnership with the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team is a significant step in our journey towards reconciliation. Together, we aim to create pathways that not only celebrate Indigenous culture but also provide tangible opportunities for growth and leadership within the rugby community."
The enhanced collaboration will focus on initiatives such as talent identification programs, cultural awareness training, and community engagement events, all designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous heritage within the sport.
