The NSW Positive Rugby Foundation and Creating Chances are proud to announce a four year partnership, Rugby – Tackle Life, that will provide a unique opportunity for high school students and youth in Western Sydney to develop their potential through a series of in-school and community based rugby capacity building and participation based rugby programs.

Supported by Multicultural NSW, Rugby - Tackle Life, is a collaboration that will engage over 2,000 young people to promote participation, leadership and inclusive communities through the values, qualities and skills developed through playing, coaching and administering Rugby Union.

100 High School students from Penrith, Blacktown and Campbelltown Local Government Areas will be taught coaching and mentoring skills for 6 weeks before they are sent to coach and mentor 350 local primary school students through an 18-week program including a free, community rugby program to support local clubs.

“This program builds a foundation for young people in Western Sydney to have the confidence to work hard and achieve their goals by learning and developing through Rugby Union. The legacy of their coaching and mentoring on the primary school kids and the local clubs will be enormous and builds both the broader rugby community and the opportunities for kids to play and coach rugby in Western Sydney.” Andrew Hill, Head of Schools NSW Positive Rugby Foundation said.

NSW Rugby mentors and ambassadors and members of the Super W squad will support the high school students throughout the program and assist them in becoming role models within their community – increasing their capacity to make a positive impact on their future.

“From our early days as the Rugby Youth Foundation we’ve known that Rugby Union has enormous potential to engage and inspire the youth of Western Sydney and this partnership will provide a unique school to community connection that will not only foster improvements in resilience, self-confidence and optimism, but also in valuable employment skills and a stronger sense of community” Brad McCarroll, Creating Chances General Manager said.

“Rugby is a truly global game and has the ability to be a powerful tool for inclusion and development within our multicultural society. Not only do we have strong links to the Pacific, but with rugby growing at an amazing pace in Asia, it is exciting to use the social skills and sense of belonging that rugby provides to bring communities together,” Peter Murphy, Head of Positive Rugby Foundation said.

Rugby Union has the capacity to create a positive impact for individuals, schools and communities and this unique partnership brings together expertise in rugby, youth development and community enhancement to turn potential into action.
